PODY1029 Applied Health Sciences for Podiatry

Module Overview

This module builds upon the preceding 'Foundations of Health Sciences' and 'Advanced Health Sciences' modules, by challenging students to demonstrate knowledge in a more applied fashion. On completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to describe, in detail, the biopsychosocial approach, using relevant evidence to apply this model to your own clinical practice. Using a variety of case studies, this module will serve to extend your knowledge and understanding of the basic structure and function of the cardiovascular- and respiratory systems, as delivered in the Foundations of Health Sciences module. More complex descriptions of the anatomy and physiological processes involved in normal functioning of these systems will provided. In addition, various pathophysiological processes will be explored in relation to a number of relevant health conditions. You will gain an insight into the strategies that facilitate effective communication in a healthcare setting. You will be given opportunity to consider and practice communication skills through written and verbal interaction with peers, academics, clinicians and patients, where applicable.

This module will serve to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of the integrative relationship between anatomy, physiology, psychology, and sociology as it relates to the whole person, and provide opportunities for you to practice the application of knowledge, whilst drawing on current research activities and healthcare innovations.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the detailed structure and function, and the key anatomical and physiological changes associated with a range of common pathologies and health conditions affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the integrated nature of anatomical, pathophysiological, and psychosocial factors that may influence the patient experience.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of effective communication in healthcare, and describe how this may impact upon your ability to communicate with a range of individuals, including, but not limited to, patients, care givers and practitioners.
  • Demonstrate your ability to search for and utilise appropriate research evidence, and be aware of advances in healthcare research and innovation.


Using a range of case studies reflective of current practice, the syllabus may include information pertaining to the following: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems: - Various pathologies of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems (e.g., heart defects, cardiovascular disease, thrombus / embolus formation, infarction, oedema, COPD, asthma, infection) Psychosocial: - Factors influencing a patient's health-related quality of life Communication: - Theory and application of effective strategies for communicating with peers / patients / care givers / practitioners, in consideration of the many differing backgrounds of individuals (e.g., differing ages / with learning disabilities / experiencing mental health problems, i.e., stress, anxiety, depression). - Understanding, accessing, and critiquing research evidence - Evidence-based practice Transferable Skills: - Verbal and written communication skills - Planning and organisation - Decision making - Project management - Time management - Independent study skills - Team-work - Initiative - Analytical skills - Research skills - Writing skills - Creative problem solving - Information technology

Special Features

Shared teaching is a key feature of Applied Health Sciences. Students from different professional programmes, including Physiotherapy and Healthcare Sciences, will attend lectures alongside those from Podiatry. Research-led teaching is a prominent theme in this module and, where possible, input from researchers with applied experience will enhance the taught component. Where appropriate, input from service users or representatives of service user groups will be sought to enhance the teaching and learning activities on this module.

This module will use a blended-learning approach, with a range of teaching and learning activities. You will be directed to attend lead lectures which are identified as essential to underpin your knowledge and future practice. You should also gain the skills necessary to manage your own learning, and to exercise initiative, and personal and professional responsibility.
