PRES0051 Academic Writing 25 Weeks

Module Overview

Please refer to the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme Specification for further details of the programme. This module is non-credit bearing. It forms part of the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme in which you also study Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Academic Speaking and Independent Learning (IL). In IL, you will further develop critical thinking and study skills necessary to succeed at the University. The Academic Writing module focuses on non-subject specific academic English as well as general English language development.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Use appropriate writing strategies for your purposes
  • Plan and structure your writing effectively
  • Paraphrase, summarise, synthesise, use quotations and reference correctly from sources
  • Use academic language appropriately and effectively in written work
  • Produce essays with appropriate content


The writing syllabus covers five key areas: developing a clear and cohesive essay structure; using outside sources effectively in essays; producing essays with appropriate content; using academic language appropriately and developing grammatical accuracy and range. You will also focus on general English language which you can use outside of the classroom.

Teaching and learning methods

You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including: full class teaching; lectures; workshops; individual, pair and group work in class; set tasks to be completed outside class; use of authentic reading texts for exploitation; independent learning workshops; and self-directed independent study and tutorials with your tutors.
