PSIO6031 Practice Placement 4

Module Overview

This module provides an opportunity to experience current practice in a variety of locations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Principle providers of placement will be in health or social care settings (with some additional placements in schools, prisons, private and voluntary organisations for Occupational Therapists). You will be attached to an experienced therapist (OT/PT) who will act as placement educator for the entire period of study. You and the placement educator will be allocated a Locality Contact (a member of the academic staff in the Faculty’s OT/PT team) who will provide a link to the academic programme and will visit you at least once during the placement. You are supernumerary to the staff on the unit in which you are placed. This particular placement has a focus on you making an active contribution to the assessment and treatment of service users in a specific area of practice. You will take an active part under close supervision of the placement educator who will support you to take responsibility for and work independently with a selected case load. Integration of Service Users (SU) The experience of working closely with SU of all ages, cultural backgrounds and across clinical specialities is an essential ingredient to the learning and assessment of competency in HCP programmes. This placement links to work carried out in other level 6 modules where specific service user groups needs and/or treatment is investigated at a basic foundation level. You need to be aware of SU lived experiences derived from narratives, research and evaluation of practice. This will improve your knowledge base and also underpin any self-development activities linked to practice placement. This combination of theoretical evidence and practice-based work will ensure that the profile and needs of SU are handled in a proactive and positive manner in all your scholarly and practical activities. Multi-Professional Learning The partnership between the academic and practice arena is an essential ingredient in the development, delivery and evaluation of HCP programmes. During other level 6 modules you will have opportunities to work alongside and learn together in mixed groups of HCP students and this will be replicated in all practice placement experiences where different professions frequently work together within clinical teams. It is envisaged that these experiences will have impact on how, and what you explore and in particular may be a feature of aspects of your personal and professional development activities (see below for learning outcomes).

Module Aims

The overall aim of this module is to provide practice based experience in the treatment and management of services users. You will build upon prior practice placement experience; integrate theoretical knowledge and skills learnt in academic modules into the practice environment and utilise transferable cognitive, affective and practical skills. On successful completion of this module you will: • Demonstrate the ability to transfer and build on knowledge and skills gained prior to this placement • Communicate effectively with service users, carers and other professionals and vary approach according to identified needs • Elicit information from a range of sources, utilise a range of assessment methods appropriately and analyse and synthesise independently relevant information • Justify decisions made in relation to service user management using evidence-based practice • Be proficient and confident in the choice of, and application of appropriate therapeutic and management skills • Plan and manage time and resources effectively and prioritise actions

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively with patients and other professionals and work in partnership with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, taking account of ethical considerations and respecting their rights, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Develop constructive working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive accurate records and reports as necessary.
  • Assess a patient/client, negotiating and analysing the information with the patient/client, prioritising problems and planning an appropriate management programme independently, recognising their physical, psychological and social/cultural needs.
  • Critically appraise the range of therapeutic interventions to implement a management programme safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Evaluate and reflect on the outcome of clinical decisions with the patient/client and be able to appropriately alter or discontinue treatment, or to make referrals to other services.
  • Utilise previous experience and adapt therapeutic/management practice to meet varying circumstances and the health/social care environment.
  • Manage themselves, a caseload and others to optimise results.
  • Provide evidence of a search strategy and effectiveness criteria related to a complex case and/or area of practice.
  • Provide evidence of personal and professional reflection and planning appropriate to continuing professional development and re-registration.


The integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to the specialty area of the placement reflect the five sections of practice: safe/professional conduct, professionalism, interpersonal, clinical/therapeutic and management skills as defined in the pre-set practice placement assessment criteria. Introduction to the Continuous Professional Development process: including developing learning outcomes/objectives, reflecting on a learning experience and producing a practice case study/piece of work. You will receive guidance and prompting a placement educator and take an active role in, and where appropriate be responsible for a caseload under their supervision. You will have opportunity to work with and learn from other health professionals and appropriate staff within the placement setting as well as the named placement educator to facilitate understanding of the multidisciplinary and complex nature of health and social care provision.

Special Features

Service users have had a ‘patient voice’ in developing the learning outcomes for this module. Some practice placements are located in buildings which may be inaccessible to students with restricted mobility, for example, in old hospital buildings. Additionally some practice placements may require students to visit people in their domestic settings with a variety of accessibility issues. However, alternative placements will be made available so that you have an equivalent experience and can meet the required learning outcomes. Grading of Placements It is planned that the assessment of clinical placements (for both Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy) will move from a paper-based format to an electronic format (electronic Assessment of Professional Practice’ - eAoPP) in 2016. The format for both professions will be the same but there will be a slight variation in the terminology used. The eAoPP is currently under construction and is expected to be operational for these professions in 2016. Please find detailed below an overview of what will be included. There are 5 specific domains of assessment each with their own subsection criteria: Section One – Safety Section Two – Professionalism Section 3 – Interpersonal Skills/Communication Section 4 – Therapeutic/Clinical Skills Section 5 – Management/leadership Skills Sections 1 & 2 have 3 response items namely unsatisfactory, needs improvement or satisfactory. Sections 3 – 5 have 5 response items graded A – E, where E is a fail. The importance of safety and professionalism is emphasised by sections 1 & 2 being assessed in the same manner on each placement. To represent your increasing proficiency and level of achievement the criteria for sections 3 – 5 differ and are further developed for each level as you progress from Placement 1 – Placement 4/5.

Your learning will be facilitated by a placement educator(s) who will use a variety of methods, including: • Demonstration by a recognised placement educator in the placement facility • Supervised service user contact using mentorship • Staff and learner led presentations • Case study/presentations • Ward rounds/case conferences • Attendance at clinics and opportunities to observe specialist treatments such as surgical interventions • Departmental in-service programmes • Peer support in the university and practice-based setting • Support from placement educators and visiting academics (locality contacts) • ELearning resources: blackboard site • Learning resources in practice area • Practice Placement handbook
