Module Aims

• To provide students with high-quality teaching in a different learning environment. • To offer students a range of topics including the geology of North America, climate, water resources, isotope geochemistry, volcanology, stratigraphy, resource geology, marine geology and biogeochemistry, structural geology and micro-palaeontology. Recognising that the students undertaking this course will be some of the best in SOES we will, with colleagues abroad, endeavour to develop a stimulating and challenging curricular best suited to the students interests and ambitions. Syllabus

Students will build on their Southampton background to develop advanced interest and knowledge in a range of geological topics from the Archean to the present (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10) From their elective courses they will cover the: Geological evidence for climate change and the mechanisms of change, especially from the Ice Age through the near future (Learning outcomes 1, 2). Aqueous geochemistry of silica, alumina, carbonate minerals and selected metals as well as organic and isotope geochemistry applied to water (Learning outcomes 3, 4). Theory for natural isotopic and element variations and their applications to geologic and cosmologic problems (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4). Phenomena and products associated with volcanic eruptions and the physical characteristics of lava and pyroclastic materials (Learning outcomes 1, 5). Description and genesis of sedimentary rocks, their stratal geometries and their correlation (Learning outcomes 6, 7). Chemical and physical processes affecting the topography and sediments of the seafloor (Learning outcomes 6, 7). Geology of economically important styles of ore deposits (Learning outcomes 1, 4, 8). The properties, origin, migration and occurrence of oil and gas (Learning outcomes 1, 4, 9). Geometry, kinematics and dynamics of deformation in the Earth’s crust (Learning outcome 10). Theory and application of micropaleontology (Learning outcome 11).Implications and perturbations of marine global biogeochemical cycles (Learning outcome 12). The planning and execution of an investigative geological research project (Learning outcome 13).

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

This module aims to provide students with an opportunity to study in a different cultural environment and to receive instruction from research leaders in a top international University. Formal lectures by research leaders in Earth, ocean and planetary science. Practical and Laboratory classes using state of the art facilities. Fieldwork some courses will involve visits to type locations and critical sections, and will involve deployment of state of the art field equipment. Examples classes in small groups with expert supervision. Computer-based classes using state of the art software. A wide range of support can be provided for those students who have further or specific learning and teaching needs.
