Module overview
This module is the Semester 2 component of an integrated programme of English Language teaching designed to allow you to learn and practise the academic language skills you will need to succeed in your university study. It builds on your Semester 1 module and encourages you to extend your academic skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing with increasing confidence and understanding of Higher Education study skills in English.
You will continue to attend Independent Learning and General Language Development sessions, to establish the critical thinking and reflective study skills necessary to succeed at the University. You will focus on greater appreciation of independent learning skills, to help you progress in your studies.
You will continue to practise a range of skills in the same class, with more interaction with your peer group.

- work as a member of a team by cooperating with others, negotiating, listening to others in a group, sharing responsibilities & tasks and meeting deadlines;
- apply a range of reading strategies to help you to read efficiently;
- utilise reliable sources appropriate for your discipline e.g. use of library sources.

Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- recognising the relevant conventions followed in academic English (both written and spoken) e.g. referencing;
- using reliable sources appropriate for your discipline e.g. use of library sources;
- constructing an academic essay or report, which involves the use of sources.
Syllabus
The module has an integrated approach that builds on the Semester 1 skills: these are taught together as they are rarely used in isolation. Your classroom sessions will focus on advancing your academic reading and writing, and listening and speaking competencies. You will develop your study skills in greater depth through independent learning workshops, as well as academic advisory sessions.

Teaching and learning methods
You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including: full class teaching; real life and videoed lectures; individual, pair and group work in class; discussions in small groups; set tasks to be completed outside class; use of authentic lectures for exploitation; self-directed independent study and group tutorials.
