The module seeks to increase student’s awareness of the chemical industry and to develop their professional skills through reflective practice.
Aims and Objectives
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Reflect on their personal and professional practice and development.
- Discuss the various aspects of the industry in which they work, including internal company structure and the wider landscape of their industrial field.
- Identify professional development needs.
- Evaluate working practices in an effort to improve performance in the workplace.
The module will consist of two parts.
Through self-directed study, students will develop a presentation on the structure and strategic aims of their host-company, and their place within it. They will also put this into the context of the wider national and international landscape with regards to Chemical Industry.
Personal effectiveness and development.
With guidance, through a number of structured blog entries students will evaluate their performance in the workplace. Through the use of evidence from themselves and external sources, they will reflect on key aspects of their practice and create personal development plans in an effort to improve at work. The foci for reflection are drawn from statements developed for evidencing RSC Chartered Chemist status, which identify professional skills development with specific reference to chemical industries.

Students will be expected to independently research the company in which they work.
For the reflective development, students will keep a blog of their working practices, and reflect on these through the provision of evidence. Feedback from staff will be regularly provided to allow students to develop their reflective skills to best identify their own needs.
