This module provides the students with the opportunity to gain experience in different health, social or community care settings which can be abroad or in the UK. However, due to the current restriction in travel secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, there may not be opportunities to travel abroad to undertake a clinical elective.
The module would usually take the format of an 8-week placement in one or more care settings. The timing will vary for different student groups and the teaching staff will vary for different practices and student groups. In the light of the global Covid -19 pandemic and the travel, quarantine and placement restrictions this causes, we are giving options to students to take this as a 4 week placement and encouraging local and UK -based placements. Students may wish to explore a specialist interest or experience a non-NHS healthcare setting We also are strongly encouraging students to enrol as vaccinators in the Covid-19 vaccination programme or be deployed in clinical or non-clinical environments to support clinical staff or patients during the pandemic.
As is the nature of placements, the exact learning experiences of each student will be variable however all students should receive the same broad opportunities sufficient to achieve the learning outcomes of the module and it is expected that students will take responsibility for making the most of the opportunities provided. Where possible, students are encouraged to be pro-active in securing experiences in areas in which they feel they are weak and/or in which they would like to gain more experience.
An alternative “Academic Elective” module option is available to students if they are unable to secure placement experiences as above or if this is their preference.
