MUSI1012 First Year Performance Tuition

Module Overview

This module allows you to develop your music performance skills to a new level. A combination of individual tuition (20 1hr lessons) and a variety workshop and public performance opportunities provide you with the chance to study new repertoire, improve your technical skills and add to your performance experience. Attending concerts and events also gives you the opportunity to see professional musicians in performance.

  • Exert greater technical control over your instruments or voice
  • Perform from notation or by ear, at short notice


You will meet with your instructor individually and will be required to learn repertoire appropriate to your level and year, as well as technical materials provided by performance staff. You will attend lunchtime concerts and engage in relevant performance projects and workshops run by visiting musicians, members of the department and Heads of Performance. You will be required to complete three assessments: - a practical performance examination 15 minutes in length - a practical sight-reading or playing by ear performance examination (which includes a preparation period) - a blog of 300 words reporting on musical events attended

Special Features

This module provides you with a significant amount of one-to-one tuition with an expert in their field whilst giving various performance opportunities in closed and public settings (often with involvement from professional musicians). In addition, the lunchtime concert series and various projects involving professional musicians give exposure to a variety of viewpoints, genres, and ideas in addition to those of the regular faculty. In addition to formal assessment feedback, informally you will receive feedback from peers and faculty on optional lunchtime concert performances, in-class performances, and in your lessons.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching will be delivered in lessons with specialist teachers and workshop sessions. You will be given the opportunity to perform in classes/workshops, department performance projects (often resulting in public performance), as well as the opportunity to take part in workshops and masterclasses with visiting performers. You will also learn while listening and observing lunchtime concerts and while rehearsing with accompanists (if appropriate for your programme). There will be a series of classes dealing with professional practice in performance, such as: practice habits, programming, programme notes and promotion/marketing.

Assessment Strategy

Students receive verbal feedback during each lesson. Feedback on the performance exam is given in writing by the examiners on an exam sheet providing a mark, detailed commentary on the performance itself.
