MUSI1015 First Year Performance Tuition (for Music Minor and non-Music students)

Module Overview

You will study a musical instrument of your choice under the guidance of a professional teacher. Possibilities include brass instruments, keyboard instruments, string instruments, wind instruments, vocal studies and percussions. You will concentrate on strengthening your technical knowledge and command of your chosen instrument and have the opportunity to explore stylistic and expressive possibilities in various styles (e.g., classical, jazz, pop, musical theatre). You will prepare a solo programme, working with an accompanist (e.g. a pianist or harpsichordist) or a small accompanying group (e.g. a continuo ensemble, a rhythm section or backing band) of your choosing, as appropriate, or you may take on the role of accompanist with suitable musicians, following consultation with faculty. It is normally expected that students should have achieved ABRSM Grade 7 or equivalent and/or by agreement from a member of Faculty staff following audition.

Module Aims

The aims of this module are to:  Prepare you to perform proficiently as a soloist or accompanist.  Improve your technical and musical abilities on your chosen instruments.  Increase your awareness and skills of performing in various environments.

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Technical problems and solutions on chosen instruments.

  • Greater musical control of your instruments (including dynamic range, colour range, shape and structure, and phrasing).
  • Greater technical control of your instruments (facility, pitch range, flexibility, tone control, muscular coordination).
  • Greater understanding of performance in various contexts.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Apply practice techniques to new repertoire.
  • Structure practice sessions effectively.
  • Self-evaluate in practice and rehearsal to continue to improve.
  • Argue for or against a musical or stylistic approach to a piece in your repertoire.


You will meet with your instructor individually and will be required to learn repertoire appropriate to your level and year. You will be encouraged to attend lunchtime concerts and relevant performance projects and workshops run by visiting musicians and faculty. You will be encouraged to perform in any performances that the faculty deems appropriate. Towards the end of the module you will be assessed in a performance exam.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching will be delivered in lessons with specialist teachers. You will be encouraged to attend classes/workshops with faculty, department performance projects (often resulting in public performance), as well as taking the opportunity to attend workshops and masterclasses with visiting performers. You will also learn while listening to and observing lunchtime concerts and while rehearsing with accompanists (if appropriate for your programme).

Assessment Strategy

Students receive verbal feedback at the end of each lesson and receive marks and commentary concerning technical progress and musical accomplishment. Feedback on the performance exam is given in writing by the examiners on an exam sheet providing a mark, detailed commentary on the performance itself, and points for improvement as appropriate.
