NPCG3019 Practice Experience 6

Module Overview

This is the 6th and final practice learning placement in the PGDip Programme and is a sign off placement. You will be allocated a “sign off” mentor for this placement. Successful attainment of this module, along with all the other components of the PGDip Programme, will enable you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). It is assessed at level 6.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

The practice experience provides a work-based environment to enable you to apply the theoretical knowledge and skills learnt in academic module/s. Modular learning outcomes tested through a practice based assessment. Core attributes and specified essential skills and competencies must be achieved in each practice experience. Any required statutory and mandatory skills training and updates will be undertaken, as required by contractual arrangements, and recorded on the practice portal.

Each practice learning placement is supported by the electronic assessment of practice portfolio (eAOPP). This gives a clear indication of the learning requirements for each placement.

Practice experience is supported by direct supervision from mentors and other professionals. Although you have supernumerary status you are expected to be involved in direct care. Opportunities exist in each practice experience for you to arrange additional learning experiences to meet your learning needs. Further support is provided through discussion of practice experiences and specific case scenarios during Learning Group meetings with peers and academic tutors.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

Travel Costs for placements

All students can obtain further information about practice learning and travel costs on the FOHS Practice Learning Blackboard site: https://blackboard.soton.ac.uk/webapps/blackboard/content/listContentEditable.jsp?content_id=_3325300_1&course_id=_166482_1&mode=reset The funding to support student learning in practice is negotiated by the Faculty as part of the Practice Partner Agreement with Health Education Wessex and our practice learning partners across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. If you are an NHS commissioned student who has to undertake a practice placement you may be entitled to have the cost of journeys between your term-time residence and the practice placement site (which is not part of your University), reimbursed. Practice placement involves training in hospitals or community health services rather than a classroom. The daily cost of travel to the practice placement site must be greater than the normal daily travel cost from your term-time residence to college. You are advised to contact NHS Bursary if you need to clarify your eligibility to claim for travel expenses.
