NPCH3009 Complex Care (Child)

Module Overview

This module is designed for year 3 BN single field students. The Final year students are expected to submit a summative assignment for the module at Level 6. This is a 2500 word essay. The module enables the students to reflect upon decision making in clinical practice in line with NMC competencies. The module comprises taught sessions, clinical skills sessions that relate to decision making as well as Tutor facilitated time that supports level 6 writing, self-awareness, reflection on practice, and practise in presenting. In addition, there is a guided study workbook and a list of suggested additional resources.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the diagnostic and decision making skills required for the safe assessment, planning and delivery of care for an infant child or young person with complex care needs and/ or critical health care needs
  • Articulate an in depth knowledge of the pathophysiology, treatment and care needs of infants, children and young people with a range of conditions requiring complex, critical and/or technologically dependent care.
  • Critically evaluate the evidence base underpinning the holistic care of infants, children and young people requiring complex therapeutic interventions
  • Demonstrate the communication and negotiation skills required when delivering family centred care to infants, children, young people and their families in a variety of complex healthcare situations and settings
  • Critically examine the specific issues relating to the safeguarding of infants, children and young people presenting with complex healthcare needs
  • Critically consider the legal and ethical issues related to care management and end of life decision making, in the care of infants, children and young people with complex healthcare needs
