Module Overview

The aim of this module is to equip you as a future health visitor with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to deliver health care that meets and promotes the needs of children and families.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Critically assess the health and wellbeing of infants, children, parents and families using a range of evidence based and recognised assessment tools.
  • Demonstrate an ability to effectively plan health care interventions to support the health and wellbeing of individuals, groups and communities.
  • Effectively recognise and act upon concerns associated with safeguarding children and young people to identify and minimize risk of interpersonal abuse and violence.
  • Critically evaluate interventions and approaches intending to promote positive outcomes to support the health and wellbeing of individuals, groups and communities.


Search for health needs: • Individual, family and community assessment skills ante-natal, primary birth and developmental assessments. • Physiological and psychosocial development of infancy and childhood. • Contemporary family • Attachment and parenting. • Neurological development. Stimulation of awareness of health needs: • The context of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults • Assessment of need and risk and targeted intervention  Antenatal  Postnatal  During first year  During pre school period • The characteristics of interpersonal/domestic abuse Influence of policies affecting health: • Delivery of the Healthy Child Programme. • Evidence based preventative health interventions  Nutrition and exercise  Breast feeding  Immunisation  Sudden infant death and Care Of the Next Infant (CONI)  Accident prevention  Smoking cessation Facilitating health enhancing activities: • Strengths based approaches to working with families • Parental support and enablement  Webster-Stratton  Solihull approach  Confident parents confident kids

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

A variety of teaching and learning approaches will be used in this module. These include lead lectures, discussion, guided reading, group activities, guided discovery learning and e learning. You will be encouraged to use your practice teacher/mentor/peers as a resource for learning.
