PRES0046 Academic Listening 39 Weeks

Module Overview

Please refer to the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme Specification for further details of the programme. This module is non-credit bearing. It forms part of the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme in which you also study Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Academic Speaking and Independent Learning (IL). In IL you will further develop critical thinking and study skills necessary to succeed at the University. The Academic Listening module focuses on non-subject specific academic English as well as general English language development.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

The academic listening module is part of an integrated programme designed to allow you to learn and practise the academic listening skills you will need to succeed in your future university study. Throughout the module, you will be strongly encouraged to develop your general and academic listening skills and confidence. You will also be taught effective practice in note taking and techniques to help you to understand a variety of academic contexts, particularly academic lectures, and to understand different accents.

  • Develop strategies for improving your listening skills both within the classroom and outside
  • Better understand lectures at University
  • Better understand academic staff and classroom colleagues
  • Take effective notes in lectures and seminars
  • Understand a variety of accents
  • Effectively listen for gist and detail

Syllabus

The listening syllabus helps you to develop strategies for improving your listening for gist and for specific information, and focuses in particular on how to listen effectively in lectures and how to take useful notes while listening. You will attend guest lectures in order to practise the skills taught in class, and to accustom you to the style of lectures in the UK.

Teaching and learning methods

You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including: full class teaching, individual, pair and group work in class, discussions in small groups, tasks to be completed outside the class, use of authentic listening texts for exploitation, self-directed independent study and tutorials.
