PRES0047 Academic Reading 25 Weeks

Module Overview

Please refer to the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme Specification for further details of the programme. This module is non-credit bearing. It forms part of the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme in which you also study Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Academic Speaking and Independent Learning (IL). In IL you will further develop critical thinking and study skills necessary to succeed at the University. The Academic Reading module focuses on non-subject specific academic English as well as general English language development.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Use appropriate reading strategies for your purposes
  • Efficiently identify reliable sources appropriate for your discipline
  • Employ critical reading skills
  • Understand the structure of academic texts at whole text and paragraph level
  • Understand academic English writing structures and vocabulary at sentence and paragraph level


The reading syllabus helps you to develop strategies for finding general and specific information in a text using skimming and scanning, develop critical thinking, understand academic English writing structures and vocabulary at sentence and paragraph level, and focuses in particular on how to read journal articles and other academic texts effectively for assignments, and how to make useful notes while reading.

You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including: full class teaching; lectures; workshops; individual, pair and group work in class; set tasks to be completed outside class; use of authentic reading texts for exploitation; independent learning workshops; and self-directed independent study and tutorials with your tutors.
