About this course

With this degree you can develop advanced skills in English and another language while gaining a deep understanding of the history and politics of European integration. You will also build your English fluency and boost your employment prospects by spending a year in the UK. This degree is only open to students who are not native English speakers.

This is one of the few European studies courses to be combined with a Modern Languages degree. It focuses particularly on the political, legal and economic structures of Europe as well as society, ideology and culture.

Using our proven language development system, we will make sure you start at a level that matches your ability in English and your other chosen language. This means we can personalise your learning so you make the best progress. The Centre for Language Study at Southampton also has everything you need.

You must study English as one of your two languages. For your second language you can choose from:

  • French

  • German

  • Italian

  • Portuguese

  • Spanish

You’ll also have the freedom to tailor your degree to areas that interest you. You could, for instance, take modules from other subject areas, go deeper into Linguistics, or explore more about European and Latin American history and culture.
