Module overview
This module introduces you to Textile Design through the areas of printed, woven and knitted textiles. The introduction to the three specialist areas of the programme will allow you to use a range of research methods and media exploration to generate ideas, which will be explored through introductory workshop skills, materials and processes across the three specialisms. This will enable you to make choices regarding the more specialist direction of your practice. As well as engaging in creating your practical work, you will learn how your contextual knowledge and critical thinking will help you develop and enhance your work. You will be able to engage in exciting skills you may not have explored before. This module will also give you the opportunity to gain confidence within a specialism and experience new ways of thinking and making.

- Sketchbook development
- Workshop inductions
- Drawing sessions
- Introductory Digital sessions
- Health and Safety
The projects and technical inductions of this module are set to enable you to explore the range of textile subject specialisms. Workshops will introduce you to basic techniques and skills in research, drawing for design, handloom sampling, flatbed machine knitting, textile printing and digital design. Tutorials and studio sessions will guide you through research methods, idea development and approaches for interpretation into textile design ideas.
These should help promote your understanding of printed, woven and knitted textiles. Based on your experiences towards the end of this module, you will be asked to choose a Textile Design specialism you want to pursue in the next practice based module, Textiles, Materials and Design.
Your choice of a specialism in this module will help you consider and finalise which of the programme’s specialist pathways suits your strengths and interests and will be your mode of study for the rest of the programme in Parts 2 and 3.

Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes
In this module, creative teaching activities and interactive learning will help you to develop a range of skills through which you can explore a project specific to textile design and the modules learning outcomes. You will experience a variety of creative and technical workshops, which are designed to give you an introduction to textile design and offer you tools through which to experiment and explore. Lectures and further workshops will introduce you to the subject areas, project theme and contextualise your thinking. You will be encouraged to develop your critical thinking to help you enhance your work through its development.
Group and one-to-one tutorials are held with specialist staff that will help you to review your progress and development. Group discussion and group critiques will provide opportunities for peer group learning and self-evaluation. Formative Assessment is non-marked. Formative feedback is given continually through a variety of verbal opportunities during the module, including weekly tutorials and project reviews as well as peer-group sessions. This will allow you to reflect on and develop your understanding of the module, your discipline and subject, and help you review the progress of your own work. Written formative feedback is undertaken mid –semester to help identify any issues in advance of Summative Assessment. Summative Assessment (written sheet with mark) is based on a final portfolio of work presented in response to the set projects at the end of each semester.
Specialist staff, along with your Personal Tutor, will advise you on your choice of subject specialism for the Textiles, Materials and Design Module taking place in Semester 2.
