Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- How class, race and gender shaped Victorian society
- The interrelationship between Britain and empire in the Victorian period
- The development and impact of the Great Exhibition
Syllabus
This module will explore the social history of Victorian Britain. The emphasis will be placed on interactions in metropolitan Britain, but we will consider how ‘nation’ and ‘empire’ were neither separate nor distinct entities but were instead mutually constitutive and completely interconnected. In part 1, we will interrogate how Britain was reconfigured and reimagined in the Victorian period, shaped by gender, race and class. In part 2 we will use ‘The Great Exhibition’, an international exhibition of art and industry held in London in 1851, as a lens through which to understand and illuminate these broader themes.
