Module Overview

Please refer to the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme Specification for further details of the programme. This module is non-credit bearing. It forms part of the Year Round Pre-sessional Programme in which you also study Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Academic Speaking and Independent Learning (IL). In IL you will further develop critical thinking and study skills necessary to succeed at the University. The Academic Speaking module focuses on non-subject specific academic English as well as general English language development.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Prepare and deliver an effective presentation
  • Prepare and participate in seminar discussions
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Communicate confidently with your University staff and classroom colleagues
  • Identify ways in which to improve your pronunciation


The speaking syllabus covers three main skill areas: pronunciation skills, presentation skills and seminar discussion skills. However, the syllabus will also focus on general English language to be used outside the classroom in order to build your confidence.

Teaching and learning methods

You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including: full class teaching; lectures; workshops; individual, pair and group work in class; set tasks to be completed outside class; use of authentic reading texts for exploitation; independent learning workshops; and self-directed independent study and tutorials with your tutors.
