Module overview

The development of CBT models focusing on specific disorders led to significant advances in treatment through the specification and targeting of specific maintaining processes within each specific disorder. However, this, in turn led to the realization that there are many common, or transdiagnostic processes that contribute to the maintenance of mental health problems. Consequently, transdiagnostic or “third-wave” CBT interventions have been developed.

This module focuses on these transdiagnostic processes and approaches to treatment. It will provide you with knowledge about these processes and their relevance to disorders. You will develop your skills in assessment and formulation of transdiagnostic processes in a CBT framework, and will prepare you to conduct transdiagnostic interventions. Additionally, the module will address how matters relating equality, inclusion and diversity (EDI) may impact or interact with these transdiagnostic processes and the implications for this on clinical practice. Alternative approaches to wellbeing not based in western conceptualisations of psychological health will also be considered.
