Learning Outcomes

Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Academic and key skills developed include learning, research and organisational skills; communication and IT skills; intercultural and interpersonal skills.
• Operate more effectively in English in an academic setting as a result e.g. have more confidence to take part in seminar discussions; better understand spoken English and give short presentations effectively in English You will be expected to spend time studying outside the class, and tutors will provide guidance, facilities and materials to help you develop your expertise as an independent learner. You will need to spend the full ten hours of Independent learning to meet the learning outcomes.

Subject Specific Practical Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Use English in practical situations e.g. shopping; a visit to a doctor; eating at a restaurant
• Write coherent texts in a limited range of registers on every day, some specialised topics and project work
• Engage with a degree of grammatical correctness and some spontaneity in conversations relating to most everyday topics as well as in conversations on some specialised topics.
• Better understand the gist of most spoken language delivered at normal speed in a familiar accent
• Give a short presentation in English

Cognitive Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Express facts and concepts clearly using some complex constructions and an appropriate range of vocabulary
• Use a wider range of English vocabulary

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• you will be able to demonstrate more confidence, better knowledge and understanding of the use of the English Language

This module will integrate study of aspects of British culture, such as social issues, current events or topics of current interest with the study of English. There will be a particular emphasis on consolidating knowledge, use of grammar, developing listening and speaking skills in English; and to a lesser degree reading and writing skills.

You will be expected to spend time studying outside the class, and tutors will provide guidance, facilities and materials to help you develop your expertise as an independent learner. You will need to spend the full ten hours of Independent learning to meet the learning outcomes. You will spend the last four weeks of the course working on your project, which will be connected to a theme of local interest.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to enable you to achieve the learning outcomes described above. While part of any class session is likely to involve direct teaching, the emphasis is on student participation and you will be expected to take part actively in discussion.
