Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- the sources on late medieval wars
- the political, practical and legal aspects of the organisation and the conduct of war
- historiographical debates on late medieval wars
Syllabus
This module will focus on the Anglo-French and Anglo-Scottish wars over the course of 150 years, and you will examine the profound effect warfare had on these countries.
The course will consider a series of themes such as the warrior community, justification of war, military recruitment, the organisation of war, the political community, and the impact of war on politics, as well as strategy and tactics, on both lands and sea. All of these fascinating themes will be explored through a large corpus of digitised sources which you will study in English. These include financial and administrative war-related records such as indentures, contracts and accounts, as well as chronicles, and biographies.
