Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- The main political, social, cultural and foreign challenges that faced the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires in their last two decades.
- How to think comparatively across the two empires about a variety of political, social and cultural topics, revealing similar or dissimilar points of instability and the degree of success with which the two regimes responded.
- The key historiographical debates surrounding the unrest and revolutions which engulfed Austria-Hungary and Tsarist Russia.
Syllabus
This is a comparative study of the last decades of the Habsburg and Romanov empires, analysing their key points of instability and viability over twenty years. Part 1 focuses on domestic problems which faced the two empires before 1914, and how the regimes managed them (e.g. social unrest, terrorism, nationalism, and gender questions). Part 2 turns to issues of foreign policy, war, and revolution. After studying Habsburg-Russian foreign relations in the Balkans, the focus is on the two empires at war and their collapse into revolution. Out of this came civil wars but also promises of a radical new order.
