Module overview

This undergraduate module will help students to explore processes of conflict, contestation, and political and economic development in the Middle East. The module treats international relations and economic globalisation as interlinked, and imperialism and capitalism (in their various historical manifestations) as crucial dimensions of a substantive understanding of the Middle Eastern region. Students will be taken on a journey from the creation of the modern regional state system in the early twentieth century, through the nationalist development phase of the post-colonial era, the subsequent process of economic liberalisation, and the ensuing wave of anti-regime protests and counter-revolutionary reaction from 2010-11 onwards.
