About this course

Develop the knowledge and skills to become a qualified information technology (IT) and computer science teacher on this PGCE Secondary training course. You’ll spend your time at the University of Southampton and on school placements as you learn how to work with pupils aged 11 to 16 (Key Stages 3 and 4). You’ll qualify to work as a teacher in state-maintained and special schools in England and Wales.

On this Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course you’ll learn how to teach IT and computer science at secondary-school level within the UK’s National Curriculum framework.

You’ll become a confident and professional teacher of IT and computing, with the tools, techniques and understanding to guide young people through the subject.

This course focuses on:

  • the role of computing in the classroom
  • teaching and learning theory
  • moral and social issues linked to computer use
  • the teaching of the Computing National Curriculum and exams at GCSE and GCE level

You’ll learn how to make computer science and IT a challenging but accessible subject of study. You’ll be able to educate young people about:

  • coding, networking and web services
  • cyber security
  •  hardware and software

You’ll also be able to help them become the creators as well as users of technology.

You'll spend two-thirds of your time in placement schools in the Southampton area, giving you the chance to experience lesson observation, team teaching, and working with small groups and whole classes.

University-based work will prepare you for your placements, evaluate your school-based work, and develop subject-specific skills and good practice.
