Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Critically appraise theoretical perspectives on educational design.
• Indicate the ways in which a sequence of learning activity is theoretically informed in terms of its design and plan for implementation.
• Critically appraise theoretical perspectives of learning.
• Apply theory in order to critically appraise a pre-existing intervention or sequence of educational activity.

This module will enable you to utilise relevant theoretical perspectives on how students learn and how educational activity may be designed and sequenced in order to more effectively promote the learning and engagement of students to achieve intended educational outcomes. It will provide a detailed overview of established theories of learning and educational design and enable you to apply these perspectives on learning to current practice across the sector. It aims to inform critical discussion about underpinning pedagogic and andragogic theory.

Study of this module will allow you to critically appraise the extent to which the existing educational activities have been designed and implemented in line with these theories of learning. It will also enable you to apply these theoretical perspectives in the design and implementation of educational activities relevant to your own context, including how effective learning and engagement is promoted through a well-structured sequence of activity. The module should support the personal and professional development of those involved in educational design and practice.

Completion of this module will also allow you to consider the values of equality, diversity and inclusivity (ED&I) in the design and implementation of educational activity.

Teaching and learning methods

Online learning materials (such as video-based learning objects and illustrated case studies) will introduce and elaborate the key theoretical aspects of educational design and teaching and learning processes and this will be supplemented with individual and group activities (asynchronous activities such as discussion boards, wikis and construction of individual or shared documents) to support the application of these theoretical perspectives. You will then be equipped to critically appraise case studies of existing educational provision which in turn leads to the formative assessment for the module. Feedback provided on the formative assessment will support you in applying design and teaching and learning principles in the development of educational activity that may be linked to your own professional practice where that is relevant.
