Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Rehearse skills in knowledge acquisition and recording through patient assessment
• Identify the main strategies employed in health promotion demonstrating person-centred communication skills.
• Development of clinical reasoning skills in assessment and the diagnostic process
• Select, demonstrate and utilise appropriate assessment techniques including effective communication with patients
• Identify potential sources of cross infection in practice and methods for its control
• Describe and demonstrate the principles of effective communication with peers, colleagues and patients
• Demonstrate values and ethics of the health professions

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• Demonstrate awareness of the underlying principles of health and safety at work for yourselves and patients

• Principles of antisepsis, asepsis, cross-infection and risk assessment in the clinical environment.
• Instrumentation including cleansing and sterilisation techniques.
• Patient documentation including assessment proforma, referral letters, patient record cards and appropriate terminology.
• Process of systematic assessment and use of appropriate equipment.
• Health and safety, including manual handling, risk assessment, fire training and clinical emergencies.
• Surface anatomy, Joint motion and anatomical terminology.
• Uncomplicated foot pathologies e.g. hyperkeratosis, nail pathologies, soft-tissue and bony disorders.
• Patient management and care planning.
• Evidence based assessment techniques.
• Communication strategies.
• Clinical reasoning and reflective practice.
• Health education and health promotion.
• Exposure to hands on basic foot care within the voluntary sector

Teaching and learning methods

Sessions will be held to introduce the student to clinical procedure and cover aspects of the assessment technique. Methods of teaching and learning will include keynote lectures, clinical skills laboratories, clinical seminars, case presentations, student and tutor led tutorials, directed reading, audio-visual resources and practical demonstrations.
